Note to A Midsummer's Night Dream, 3.1.30: "lion among ladies"

Return
to
A Midsummer's Night Dream,
Act 3, Scene 1, Line 30.
lion among ladies: It has been suggested that Shakespeare here alludes to an episode at a court entertainment in Scotland in 1594, when a tame lion which was to have drawn a chariot was replaced by a black African so as not to frighten the spectators.
