Note to Hamlet, 1.3.13-14: "The inward service of the mind and soul / Grows wide withal"

Return
to
Hamlet,
Act 1, Scene 3, lines 13-14
The inward service of the mind and soul / Grows wide withal: the inward capabilities of the mind and spirit grow wider in step with [the growth of the body].  Laertes seems to think that for Hamlet, Ophelia is just the girl next door, an object of puppy love which will soon be outgrown.
