Note to Hamlet, 5.2.269: "quit in answer of the third exchange"

Return
to
Hamlet,
Act 5, Scene 2, line 269
quit in answer of the third exchange: pay back Laertes' win in the third round. (?)  —The king's general idea is that any little victory by Hamlet is going to be extravagantly celebrated. Perhaps he is saying this to lure Hamlet into believing that he need not try too hard, which would make Laertes' job easier.
