Note to Macbeth, Act 1, Scene 3, line 20: "penthouse"

Return
to
Macbeth,
Act 1, Scene 3, line 20.
This is the only existing contemporary image of the interior of a theater of Shakespeare's time. It is a copy of a drawing made by Johannes de Witt, a Dutch student, in 1596.

In this theater, the "penthouse" is the roof (with its supporting pillars) which covers the rear portion of the stage.
