Gregory

The opening words of the first scene are Sampson's: "Gregory, o' my word, we'll not carry coals" (1.1.1). He means that they won't take any guff from anyone. But Gregory makes a joke by deliberately misinterpreting. He says that if they did carry coals, they'd be coal-miners: "No, for then we should be colliers" (1.1.2). So it goes for a while longer; Sampson boasts, and Gregory pokes holes in his balloons. However, when these two meet some Montague servants, Sampson wants Gregory to be the one who starts the fight.
