7. art: creative talent. scope: wide range of knowledge or abilities.

10. Haply: by chance. state: i.e., mental or emotional state, mood.

12. sullen: dull, heavy.

14. state: —Here the word means both state of mind and the pomp and circumstance appropriate to kings.
