Fete may be implying that Toby and Maria would make a good match, in that Maria is as witty as Toby is sober. So the Clown's compliment of Maria' wit (Apt, in good faith; very apt) is very back-handed, which is probably the only kind of compliment she deserves for her extremely stale joke about "points" and "gaskins."
