Note to As You Like It, 1.1.114: "forest of Arden"
forest of Arden: Shakespeare's primary source for this play is a prose romance by Thomas Lodge, titled Rosalynde, Euphues Golden Legacie. In Lodge's romance, the forest of Ardennes in northeastern France is the setting for much of the action, but Shakespeare probably also had in mind the Forest of Arden near his home town, Stratford-on-Avon.
