What, for a counter, would I do but good?: i.e., I bet you can't name a single thing I might do that wouldn't be good. —A counter was a token of no intrinsic value (kind of like a poker chip), used to represent fractional amounts of money; therefore Jaques' wager is a joke. Now (C.E. 2017) we might say, "I'll bet you a gazillion dollars in Monopoly ™ money."
