Note to A Midsummer's Night Dream, 1.1.73: "Chanting faint hymns to the cold fruitless moon"

Return
to
A Midsummer's Night Dream,
Act 1, Scene 1, line 73.
Chanting faint hymns to the cold fruitless moon:—Diana, the goddess of chastity, is also the moon goddess. Apparently Shakespeare's idea is that in a pre-Christian era Hermia would become a "nun" to Diana.
