mar a curious tale in telling it: i.e., spoil an elaborate story by attempting to tell it. —This statement makes a sharp contrast with the next, "deliver a plain message bluntly"; Kent is making the point that he is an honest, trustworthy person, not the sort of courtier who is full of big words and has a hidden agenda.
