Bear baiting was a popular spectacle in Shakespeare's time, and the Bear Garden, one of the many venues for the exhibitions, was within easy walking distance of Shakespeare's Globe theater. The bear was tied to a stake and dogs were loosed on it. Bets were taken on which dogs would survive.
