Barrabas: a criminal, convicted of murder in an insurrection, whom the Jews asked Pontius Pilate to release in preference to Jesus (see Mark 15:6‑15). Shylock's point is that he would rather see his daughter married to the worst possible Jew, rather than a Christian.
