Note to Romeo and Juliet, opening stage direction: "swords and bucklers"

Return
to
Romeo and Juliet,
Act 1, Scene 1.
Swords and bucklers were very common weapons for the lower classes. They were used not only in war, but also for recreation. During Shakespeare's time young toughs would go to Smithfield, just outside the walls of London, to fight duels with sword and buckler.
