Note to The Tempest, 2.2.5 "urchin"

"Urchin" is an old-fashioned word for a hedgehog, currently England's most beloved wild animal. In Shakespeare's time "urchin" was also used as a word for a goblin or elf, because it was thought that goblins and elves could assume the shape of hedgehogs.
