Note to Hamlet, 5.2.65: "election"

Return
to
Hamlet,
Act 5, Scene 2, line 65
The king of Denmark was elected by a small group of powerful families, and only members of the royal family were eligible to be elected, so in this play the only two characters who could have been elected to the kingship are King Claudius, the late king's brother and murderer, and Hamlet, the late king's son. However, this is the first time in the play that Hamlet indicates that he ever had any interest in being king.
